Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum
The Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum is located in Carthage. The museum houses a collection of artifacts relating to the history of Hancock County and western Illinois.
Exhibits cover a broad spectrum of life in this rural community. They include wildlife and geology of the region, archeology, biographies, local education, farming, fashion, religion and church history, technology, toys and local towns.
Rooms depict a Victorian parlor, country kitchen, school classroom, Mabel’s store, a doctor’s office and post office.
In addition, there are special sections related to Abraham Lincoln, the military and Native Americans. A new exhibit on the 65-year history of Memorial Hospital is planned to open in the spring of 2016.
In 2011, the museum acquired the collection of the former Illinois Funeral Director’s Funeral Customs Museum. This collection documents the material and social history of the mortuary profession and early funeral customs.
